HYPERTENSION

Hypertension is persistent high blood pressure in which sustained systolic blood pressure above 140mmHg and diastolic blood pressure above 90mmHg may damage the arteries and the Heart.

BP varies naturally with activity rising during exercise or stress and falling during rest.

Normal BP is 120/80 mmHg.

Hypertension is a heterogenous disorder result either from specific cause(Secondary hypertension) or from unknown cause(primary hypertension)

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Most people with high BP will not experience any symptoms, which is why people often call hypertension the ‘silent killer’.

However, once BP reaches 180/120mmHg, it becomes a hypertensive crisis, which is a medical emergency.

At this stage a person may have: Headache, nausea, vomitting, dizziness, blurred vision or double vision, nose bleeds, heart palpitations, breathlessness.
